The 2005 Edition of The Bill Andrews Electronic Fish Wrapper Is Still Going!

- 14 April 2005 -

First, a disclaimer:

I have nothing against the lifeguards at La Jolla Shores -

Now, a few opinions:
I think that some of the lifeguards at The Shores are better suited for swimming pool rescues than ocean rescues -

If I were a lifeguard at La Jolla Shores, [today - 14 April 2005] and if I were in charge of placing the checkered flag designating the swimming zone, and if I placed the flag north of the main lifeguard station by more than 25 yards at the most, I would be placing swimmers at risk of drowning -

The permanent White House rip at The Shores has been world class for almost a week, and it's moving south

If the lifeguards allow anybody, except surfboarders, to get anywhere near the White House Rip, they [the lifeguards] are being careless at best -
Just my opinions of course - and these opinions are based upon my La Jolla Shores surfing and swimming experiences from about 1954 thru today.

Today's am surf is bigger, rougher, colder than yesterday's am surf - plus the White House Rip this am is at least 200 yards wide - and is farther south than yesterday in the am.

Photos of yesterday's circus of a rescue at The Shores:

Great place to swim [with the kids of course] BA asks - "why were they even allowed to enter the water here?"

Calling 911?

Somewhere - out there - someone is in BIG trouble

Where is he?

Let's paddle out there - dragging the can

Can't paddle out - let's swim out there

Tough rescue - BA sez: "I'm glad I'm not out there attempting the rescue!"

The rescue-ee makes it in - note broken surf leash -

Lifeguards check his condition

Rescue-ee THANKS rescue-er[s]

Whew - the guy was stoked to be alive!!
