The 2005 Edition of The Bill Andrews Electronic Fish Wrapper Is Still Going!

- 26 April 2005 -

I haven't had a lot of time to spend on writing more crapola for my lame web pages -

I've been spending more time than ever in the water and my job really does matter a lot to me!

So, here's the start of a whole bunch of BA's BS:

A bit of BA Natural History 101: LOOKING LIKE A SURFER -

Between the age of 13 - 25, how many times did I hear? "You don't look like a surfer!"

I used to hate having to explain to the inquisitor[s] that I wished I looked like the archetypical surfer: Well, my DNA ensured that I would never look like a surf god - [but it sure would have been nice to look like one]

It seemed, way back then, that I was a very small fish, in a very large school of competing fish, in an even larger pond.

It seemed, to me, way back then, that EVERYONE, [except I] had the physical attributes that I wished I had.

Waaaaaaaaaaaa - I'm NEVER gonna look like a way cool surfer - Waaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!

But, somehow, I did manage to find a few babes who thought I was okay, and somehow I even convinced one of them to marry me...3 really great kids [Brian, Eric, Kris] were the result!

Now, I'm in my 60's and the way I feel about myself is finally, radically different from the way I perceived myself so long ago!

FINALLY, I feel like a very large fish, in a small school, in a very small pond!

I'm still surfing every day - certainly not as well as I did 40 years ago - BUT - how many guys are there, worldwide, anywhere near my age bracket, who still surf as much as I do, in the types of waves that I like?

And -

Since the competition is less, the pond is smaller, and my self-esteem is finally starting to elevate [I'm sure some would say that it's too elevated] I've gotta admit - I look a heck of a lot more like a surfer [at least in my age group] than I ever did!

A bit of BA Natural History 101: ACTING LIKE A SURFER -

When I was in high school [La Jolla High, graduating class of 1962] it seemed to me, that most of my surfing friends, and certainly the older WindanSea guys [back then, an older surfer/WindanSea guy was about 25 years old], were following certain guidelines -

My perception of the "approved" behaviors were: Well, my DNA ensured that I might dabble on the Dark Side of surfer behavior - [but it also ensured that I wouldn't stay there very long]

Way back in the 60's, as I remember, most of the gang[s] of surfers in surf spot parking lots all surfed.

Some surfed better than others, but I think that most of the parking lot / waterside guys surfed - or at the least were active participants in water related activities - such as body surfing, spear fishing, sport fishing, etc.

Of course, the drinking and partying were part of their behaviors -

Now, some 45 years later, most of the surf side lot hangers [regardless of lot location] don't surf, many NEVER did, and some haven't been in the water EVER!

- OUCH -

Even though I think that I wanted to behave like the surf guys [back then] something kept me from falling too heavily into that mode.

I think my surf-style behaviors lasted from about 1963 thru 1969.

By the early 70's I was a home owner, husband, father, fully employed, and finishing my degree at UCSD and SDSU.

Maybe, because I was in my early 20's when I stopped attempting to attain my perception of the "romanticized" surfer behavior, it has always been easy for me to: Most importantly, I thank God that I am NOT the surfer I thought I would like to have become, a long time ago!
