| Luckily, for me - anyway - I was able to start surfing before the sport's first major tsunami craze hit La Jolla's beaches - there's no way I'd want to be starting now, and have to battle for a wave in today's crowded line-ups. I think that because of my line-up longevity, I'm able to get my share of waves for a couple of reasons: 1. I've got a pretty good idea where to sit and wait for a wave, so at least I'm usually close to proper positioning. 2. I've been surfing La Jolla's reefs for so long, that even some of the most aggressive and selfish locals will give me a pity / grandfather wave or two. Anyway, there were still reasonably good waves in The Arena yesterday - the swell direction was more north west than south west - evidenced by the considerable beach erosion - by the way, for all of you erstwhile Arenians, the Cobra Family is in full hood mode again. The line-up yesterday was a bit crowded, lottsa Boogers, a couple of groms, skimmers, Quiggs, and Max. I can't even imagine trying to compete for waves with either Quiggs or Max - between the two of them, the best waves were picked-off, and the rest of the crowd had to squabble over the remains. Quiggs' waves of choice are in the North B**d R*ck area. He surfs The Arena only when N**th B*rd ain't any good - in fact, Quiggs is in such great paddling shape, he paddles back out in the dead cockroach position. Quiggs surfs The Arena on a 20 foot long BZ and rips. Max is recognized by his peers as one of the hottest surfers in La Jolla, and has got to be included in SoCal's elite young crop. My advice to you crybabies who haven't found much SoCal surf in the past month - maybe you oughta quit crying and go surfing. You're never gonna any good if you just sit around the edges and whine - but please surf somewhere other than in LJ, you ain't gonna catch any waves here anyway. BA |
