31 Oct 2005 - Cat's in the Cradle

I'm usually more influenced by surfing movies and head banging rock and roll music than I am moved by "box-office hits" and songs that have real meaning -

- BUT -

It was way back in the mid 1970's, that I heard a song by Harry Chapin: "Cat's in the Cradle," a song about an inconsiderate, career-oriented father - apparently, the song was based on a poem written by Chapin's wife.

The song made me think a bit, and once in a while, as my own kids were growing up, I'd reflect on the job I had done as a father.

I shared the lyrics with my three sons, but we never really spoke much about them [the lyrics] or it [my job as a father]

- THEN -

Last week, I saw the movie Elizabethtown -

The male star's father suddenly dies, and the kid has to take care of the last of the affairs, including transporting his cremated dad's ashes.

In one scene. the son puts the urn on the passenger's seat and seat-belts the urn in - as he's doing so, the kid has a flashback of his dad strapping him into the seat - and, of course, the obligatory memories of things unsaid - and undone - pretty powerful, at least in my world.

- NOW -

My own son [Brian] today, is gonna be a father, and my youngest son, Kris, sent me this email:
"Damn...

I just downloaded Cats in the Cradle.

I've heard it a thousand times before, but listening to it now, after you told me it makes you sad, and on the day Brian is having his first child...

gnarly.

I totally cried...

I was fine until the last stanza:
'Ive long since retired, my son has moved away

I called him up just the other day I said

"Id like to see you if you don't mind"

He said "Id love to dad If I could find the time.

You see my new jobs a hassle, and the kids have the flu.

But Its sure nice talking to you, dad,

Its been sure nice talking to you........"

And as he hung up the phone It had occurred to me

He'd grown up just like me,

my boy, was just like me.............. '
Just wanted you to know I was thinking about you.

Hope you are well.

Happy Halloween...

Love,

Kris
