16 Sept 2005 - The 15 / 15 / 70 Rule -

I used to think it was the 80 / 20 Rule in surfing:

20% of the surfers in the water [at least in the LJ area] catch about 80% of the waves -

The other 80% in the water could grovel for the left-overs and were an annoyance.

For today's surf, the 80 / 20 just wasn't gonna cut it, so I created a new rule, 15 / 15 / 70:

About 15% of the surfers [excluding ME] in the water today [at least in the LJ Reefs area] should be there - when I say the LJ Reefs, I'm talking about Sandy Point thru The Casa.

They've surfed waves like these, many times before, and MORE than a hand full of the LJ surfers have surfed all over the world, in much more difficult conditions than today's.

About 15% of the surfers in the water today should have not wasted their money on their new Rusty Surfboard, new "Competition Diameter" surf leash, their new Hurley Big Wave wetsuit, or their Tavarua inspired tribal band tattoo - these kooks had NO business in the water, and a quite a few had to be rescued -

Now, I ain't no surf stud - far from it -

I took-off on a BA baby wave, rode it for a bit, then:

I got stuck inside in The Arena - there was ZERO way I coulda made it back outside from where I was stuck -

Then, this guy pops-up next to me - where in the hell did he come from - and - he ain't gonna make it outside either - guaranteed!

Wide-eyed guy to BA: "Dude, what are we going to do now?"

BA to guy: "See that shack - I'm gonna ride the next foam ball all the way there - I'll NEVER make it back out from here, bye-bye!"

I rode the next white water wave in, right to the small bluff at the shack WHEW!!

He ended-up stuck in the rip at Flat Rock - I had to "talk him in," from Flat Rock all the way to the sandy beach at Robertson's - he could not paddle against the rip at Flat Rock - what a couple of idiots:

Him for even paddling out in conditions far beyond his skill level -

Me for not letting him REALLY learn a lesson - I could have let him futility paddle for at least another hour or so, but of course, if I had stalled for an hour, 20 more kooks would have gotten stuck in there - I ain't got that kind of time.

The WindanSea Lifeguards today were real heroes - I saw at least 6 people get rescued - these 6 would have drowned if not for the rescues.

Two of the rescuees were saved by the lifeguards, in the dark, assisted by the helicopter and rescue boat - WHEW!!

It's 9:00 PM - Do you know where your kooks are, and the car keys??
They are on their way to Mission Bay - ALIVE - Thanks to the WindanSea Lifeguards!

About 70% of the surfers in the water today were taught a lesson in humility, but at least they didn't have to be rescued - maybe, just maybe, they'll think about what their surfing ability really is, and not what they [or their girlfriends] think it is.

I almost forgot - Spicoli, err, Comstock didn't get yelled at today - at least I think he survived!
