Question Asked:

"if someone can paddle out in six foot seas, sit outside, pick his or her wave, paddle for it, catch it and STAND up, going either front side or
backside on the face. would you consider them a surfer?..thanks"

Question Answered:

I'm gonna unilaterally make this question a bit more clear -

Oops - this is gonna take some time to answer -

It took me a few days, but I finally figgered it out -

Hollywood defined a surfer, Gidget [1959] as a James Darren type -

Hollywood defined a surfer, Beach Blanket Bingo [1965] as a Frankie Avalon type -

I knew I would never look like, or act like, a Hollywood big shot star - so I guess I would never be a real surfer.

- BUT -

It's taken me almost 50 years to figger it out - I think [my opinion only] that I can call myself a surfer -

[I think - therefore I am????]

I can still swim a mile in the ocean [from LJ Cove to the lifeguard tower at LJ Shores] -

I know how to avoid the rip at Flat Rock, The White House, and between Black's Middle Peak and the Point - and if I ride a wave into these rips, I know how to get out of them [the rips].

I'm still pulling idiots out of the rips - and -

- MOST IMPORTANTLY -

I can surf WITHOUT a leash and not worry about drowning or losing my board - well maybe I don't hold on like I used to - but at least I try!
