Welcome to a Day with BA |
||||||
"Yesterday is history - Tomorrow is a mystery - And today is a gift..." |
Almost every day, I receive an email that reads something like this:Why do you always take photos of the same places, and give these places stupid names?Well boys and girls, it's really simple.
Why do you make fun of beginning surfers, or the Photo-Op People, or people getting hurt, or falling down on the rocks or...?I live in zip code 92037 - somewhere between a Bird Rock and a Hard Place -BA
It has become a joke the lengths some will go NOT to name surf places - EXCEPT for Tourmaline -
I wake up every morning stoked to take on the new day -
I never know what is gonna happen between my house and my office - or between my office and my house.
My day starts about 4 am - regardless of the time of year - and I wrap it up right after sunset - regardless of the time of year
If I could control sunrise / sunset, I would like to have the sun rise at 4:00 am and set at 6:00 pm
Luckily - for me - my heart still pounds when I drive down Palomar and see white water - or when I drive down Torrey Pines and see waves breaking outside of Scripps Pier.
On the days that I post photos of good waves - I probably surfed before or after I took the photos - I'd much rather surf than photo
I'm not some guy cruising around looking for photo opportunities, of which to cap on others, I don't have to look for the photo ops - they seem to come to me -
I try to avoid any publicity, at all cost, and I certainly would NEVER try to attract attention, however, sometimes, the paparazzi does look for me, and I become their poster child
I'm the guy who was a beginning surfer back in the 1950's - I know what a struggle it is -More to follow - maybe -
I've been hung from The Shack, duct-taped to my board, stuffed into trash cans, rolled down the bluffs...
I'm the guy who has been injured - I know it ain't a lot of fun - I've had to deal with cancer - that ain't NO fun!
I'm an old guy - I'm in my 60's - so I can laugh at the younger ones - and I almost feel sorry for those who are around my age and seem to have lost their all important joie de vivre
I have three grown sons, so I learned a little about being a father
Today, I tried to rescue a bird - even though I've been attacked by a bird
I've fallen down on the rocks - so I can laugh at others who do -
I've been a rescuer, as well as a rescuee -
I'm not too keen on telling people that they are in potentially dangerous situations - but for some reason I do it anyway.

- 26 November 2006 -BA's Liner Notes:
The Arena this afternoon was dominated by Bird Rocker Groms, and Groms Eric, Nick and Jake.BA
By pure luck, I took a photo of an obviously non-grom. Apparently, she's a BioTech Babe and is getting her doctorate in Bio-Genius stuff - maybe she or others of her generation will discover the cure for all that ails my generation??

- 19 November 2006 -BA's Liner Notes - Not a bad Sunday - But First -Another BA disclaimer:As always, too many photos - not enough BA patience for effective editing - so - no surprise - out of focus and totally inane albums:
I went to a bunch of other surf related web sites just to ensure that my photos, words, etc. were still PG rated.
At least in my opinion - they are [PG at the worst] so I guess my Welcome to Wind**Sea photos are not that bad after all.

BA's Liner Notes:
I was gonna write a bunch of stuff about The Circus, err the Photo Ops coming to The Arena last Sunday, orBA
About how good the surf was on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, or
About how some things are just meant to be / there's a reason for things to be, or
About how stoked I am that I'm in The Mag again, not the cover but good for another 40 years or so of ego stroking [thanks Surfer Mag for 80 years of egocentricity, not too bad] or
About Sand In - Sand Out of The Arena -

Too much thinking and not enough doing
It took more than enough time just to attempt to put today's photos and words into:

===============BA's Liner Notes: AM at The Shores
Larry Crow [the other half of the Twin Towers] is probably one of the most graceful surfers that I know - I don't know many surfers, so maybe my vote doesn't count?BA
He rarely falls-off, even when he charges Outside Archie's or The Whitehouse Rights -
If I had his balance, grace, and skills, to counter act my lack thereof, I might have become a halfway decent surfer - someday??
"Hey BA, where have you been?? We heard you got a new board last week. Did you sneak down to Tourmaline to hang with your fellow kooks, and try to figger-out how to stand-up again? Your readership of three [the Swiss babes and an inmate-ette at Las Colinas] must be getting restless. Don't even try to tell us that someone actually misses your biting, err, toothless social commentary and terribly out of focus photos!"
"Naw, I spent most of Friday driving from Bird Rock, to Sorrento Mesa, to the end of Point Loma, to North Park, and finally out to El Cajon - all that driving just to enjoy the banter of dentists and their assistants as I relished the pleasure of a couple of emergency root canals."
- 05 November 2006 -BA's Liner Notes - 05 Nov 06 - PMDespite the lingering affects of dual root canals and ensuing infection, I managed to stumble down to what is normally an area of uncrowded, no surf bliss -BA
- HOWEVER -
Today just happened to be the Day of The Turtles - The celebration of another year of life - As the hatchlings grow into the precarious pre-teen years and the return to their Turtle Roots -
[As always, there was an uninvited, un-guest - Cobra Head 05 Nov 2006]
[As always, there was an uninvited, even more lethal, un-guest - Cobra Head 05 Nov 2005]
They, the Turtle Hatchlings included:
Birthday Boy LucasJust south of the Turtle Pool is the Big Kids' Pool - aka Jenny Hill Reef -
Birthday Boy Matty
Grom Nick, not Joel Nick
360 Jake
Hunter
Mikey Myers - how'd he slip into this clutch
Skip
Joey
The Pre-Teenage Non-Mutant [as long as they don't drink the water] Turtles [what kind of mischief are they into now]
Some of the big kids here may have actually contributed to the slightly crowded surf conditions there:
Tim
Not Joel - it's Nick
Jenny's husband, Randy Hill, err Lind
Johnny [Invest in Real Estate NOW!!]
Tony [Invest in Real Estate NOW!!]
Tad
GT
Patrick

BA's Liner Notes - 05 Nov 06 - AMFinally, a bit of north swell at Dale's Place -
I was hoping to see our own Twin Towers [Long Tall Larry / Two Sport Dale] ripping the huge lefts [Archie's Lefts] apart
- BUT -
I only saw one of the two surfing this morning
Long Tall Larry was probably recovering from the insane work load he, recently, has shouldered -
Luckily for us, however, Two Sport took some time away from the local barrio basketball courts where he is always willing to demonstrate his dunking abilities with his 48" vertical, err, horizontal lay-back slide.
- 04 November 2006 -BA's Liner Notes:
Lots of action today, with waves so unbelievably great, that even I, despite the incredible pain from the 2 - that's right - TWO root canals performed on me yesterday - caught a few on my new Floundering Fish Surfboard.
DJ was so stoked that he landed this death defying lip-basher, that he celebrated with one of his famous Scud LaunchesBA
The target, none other than Spicoli, err, Comstock.
It seems that Comstock had been taking up space in the lineup for two [2] hours, without catching a wave -
So, the right thing to do, according to Mr. Hand from CHS [Clairemont High School], no, not CMH [County Mental Health] was to rid the area of placeholders, DJ obliged with:Lift-offIn other, but certainly just as dramatic, La Jolla Shores newsworthy events, the members of the Good Hands Club were demonstrating the right way - "Old School" - to position one's hands:
It was just a bit off course
However, after mid-stroke correction - right on target
DJThe Genome Project and DNA research hit new heights with the disclosure that EMO and Bird are actually twin brothers, separated at birth.
Bird
GT
Wayne
Of course, the kids were hanging five and a heel or two.

- 01 November 2006 -BA's Liner Notes:
The following quote would have been a useful sermon this evening in The Arena's lineup:BA
"...when you hit a lineup what you should try and do is "read" the people. Try and understand what type of rider each of them are. Surfing is admittedly a selfish pursuit, and the less waves other people catch, the more opportunities for you..."I cribbed the above from my friend Neal Miyake - here's the rest:
