WWW A Day With BA

Note 1. Otter Rocks:

There is a world of difference between kids who grow up around the surf - kids who surf and swim regularly in fairly dangerous waters - kids whose water skills are sharpened by the type of play the La Jolla Otters are exhibiting at Otter Rocks today; and those kids who may have never even been in the ocean in their lives.

I can speak from my own experiences growing up around the ocean - before we were 14 years old, we knew every rock, reef, tidepool, within bicycle range of our houses - we understood the tides, currents, wave action. If we had lived in the desert, or mountains, we would have been doing the same type of exploring, different geography, but our adventures would have been equally as exciting.

Note 2. The Arena - can't remember a couple of the other stars' names - that's why I gotta start a Wind**Sea High School Annual.

The AM Fiasco Starring: John Snead | Hey, Bobby, better turn around

By the way - I gotta confess, as usual I did get caught inside today - and I did ditch my board -

I got dragged backwards all the way to where Snead was paddling out - Snead sez: "BA, you see that guy out there ditch his board?"

BA sez: "That guy was me, and yes, I am starting to cry like a little gi, errrr, a little baby!"

Dudes - the wave that broke on my head was at least a 300 foot [BA Scale] wave, [Hawaiian Scale, probably closer to a 3 foot wave]

Luckily for me, Matt, the big shot from Surf Inside dot Com, told me the ONLY photo he took of me this morning was the one where I was ditching my board - and he assured me that he would not post the photo - WHEW - thanks, Matt!

[3]  Almost ANOTHER tragedy at Flat Rock:

After I left the Big Shot Celebration at LJHS, I went to The Arena for another adventure [every day I surf is an adventure either for me or those who dare to get close to me]

First stop was The Penalty Box, and I could not believe that some dad had taken his two kids out on to Flat Rock -

There was a bit of surf and the tide was coming in -

Dad allows one kid to go out on the ledge above the Native American Totem

Wave washes the kid off the ledge

I threw my camera down, emptied my pockets of the EIGHT gig card and a spare Canon battery, and I was ready to jump into the water

The kid got washed all the way around the rock and climbed back up on top of the rock.

Naturally, I couldn't see the kid from where I was, but others did, and there were suddenly a lot of potential rescuers, including the lifeguard all the way from The Shack.

Final Result[s]

(a) The kid was okay,  (b) I got more photos of parental idiocy, (c) and all it cost me was my 8 gig card and battery - I mustta given them [the pocket contents] quite a toss in my dash to the kid [if anyone finds an 8 gig card and a Canon battery, please return them, I'm pretty easy to find]

I could not afford the initial investment in training and equipment.
I couldn't take the pressure of not having the photos meet the expectations of the client.

1. Pretty blown-out this afternoon - so I figger I'd snap a few photos and then go to my palace in Bird Rock and try for the 10,123,179th time to organize the photos in this lousy website.
2. Just as I'm leaving The Lot I start to watch a surf babe set-up shop under The Shack - she got my attention
3. Turns out, Simone is from Brazil, and she wants to shoot a mini video of her visit to Wind**Sea and upload it [the video] to YouTube.
4. Being the nice guy I am, I offer to help - I'll shoot the video with her camera [of course I've never shot video before, much less with a point and shoot camera]
5. Anyway, CB wanted to help, too - CB took this photo of Simone and me - she [Simone] tried to escape like this one and her friend, but couldn't break away.
6. To make a long story short - I thought I did a pretty good job of videoing - we actually did 3 takes

8. Turns out I didn't do a very good job - the gentle part of the email from Simone:

BILL!!! YOU DIDN'T RECORD THE MOVIE!!!

I wanted to spend some quality time with my surf buds in The Lot - SO - I loaned my camera to Jackie, err, Jacke, err, Jacque, err, Jacky.

She wanted to take a few photos of her surfing schoolmates at The Rock. She started with a few Arena photos and then she headed south.

Summer, err, Somer, err, Sumer was Jacky's very capable assistant.

1. I told J that I would not delete any photos she took - so being true to my word - I didn't even the delete the photos of ME - ouch - I never shouldda given her shutter control.

"Hey BA - we didn't see you out in the water today, were you too scared to paddle-out? Are you turning into one of those Bench of Despair / 10,000 Reasons Why I Didn't Surf Today babies?"

I said in my big shot TV Interview that when I feel that I'm in the way, or if I'm a hazard to the good surfers in the water, I'm staying on shore.

Today was one of those days -

By the time I got there [the place north of Seaweed Gulch] late in the afternoon, I didn't want any part of it!

I was very content to stay safe and dry on the bluff and watch the La Jolla surfers perform like I only wish I could have when I was their age!

Even Groms were pulling into some bombs - and I think that Groms Patrick and Taylor caught some of the biggest waves I saw there.

I know - it's just a different world now than it was more than 40 years ago when I first surfed here!
You're sitting inside for a reason??? I guess you think you're gonna catch more waves??
If you're sitting inside why in the H*LL don't you stay out of the way of surfers who take-off outside and are riding the wave all the way thru Right Hooker?
- All you gotta do is take the white water on the head -
You're tied to your boards, just stay in the impact zone and out of the way!! It's getting to be a joke in here!
In the surf world I grew up in - Roger has the right of way - anybody who gets in his way is running a stop sign!

I saw them get caught inside a couple of times -
Instead of behaving like some, err, most of the caught insiders, they took the waves on their heads!
They didn't paddle for the shoulder and get in anyone's way!
They took it [the wave] like everyone stuck inside should do - hang on - stay off the shoulder -
It's like this:

The surfer who is riding the wave towards the inside is riding the UNBROKEN part of the wave - the exciting part of the ride - not the foamball [only beginners and I ride foamballs]
Stay of of their way -
Let them ride the wave - you'll get your turn - maybe - someday -

If you're stuck inside, take it [the wave] on the head so the surfer on the wave doesn't have to worry about avoiding a shoulder paddling kook!
