Joanne VanMeter is a friend of mine who reached the top rungs on the USSF contest ladder - Both she and Emery competed in the USSF Surfing Championships in 2002.

When she heard the news about Emery, she dug thru her video archives and made her own tribute to Emery from video she shot at the 2002 Championships: "Video of Emery surfing in 2002 at 19 years old."

=======

I posted the photo, below, last Wednesday -

This photo may be of the last ride of Emery's short life.

We will never know which ride, on life's waves - will be our last ride.

It appeared to me that Emery rode every wave with all of the gusto and joy he could muster - perhaps - therein - is a lesson for all of us.

BA's Liner Notes:
Arena 1 - Did we have fun today!
We started by helping Lucy and Petey chase squirrels | We looked at Mikey's boo-boo | Snead even got stuck in a global warming / global cooling induced snow storm | Don't Hack [under penalty of severe pounding] Jay demonstrated true longboard style | BA sez: "Hey Jay, better look out for the guy on the blue board - he ran me over about 30 minutes ago!" | Linda sez: "Hey Booger, I'm going left!" [actually she's way too nice to say anything - she leaves that to her mean err, very kind to boogers husband]
Arena 2  - The fun continued with:
Rescue 911 | A cool '51 Ford | Retiree - Double Dipper - Pete with time for a left | A Tail Slide by Grom Lucas
Arena 3 - More fun in the fog:
Lucas sez: "Hey BA - did ya get that last wave?" | This was not a good idea
Arena 4  -  Zac joins the fun
Grom Jacob sez: "Chicks dig me 'cause I surf!" | Even the best fall off, occasionally
Arena 5  -  Grom Brad joins the fun
Grom Erik sez: "If BA can do it, so can I!" | Ian Rotgans NEVER has any fun | Grom Nick sez: "How's this for a cutty?"
Arena 6 - Hang 5 [well not quite] joins, err, ruins the fun?
BA sez: "Hey Larry, maybe you oughta look where you're going!" | Surf Hottie sez: "Hey BA, you left your pillow out in the line-up | If Larry had turned around, he would have seen Jeremy in a in a bit of a tangle
Arena 7 - Welcome to Zac's
Grom Jacob sez: "The bigger they are, the harder they fall!" | Jeremy sez: "BA, I hope you got a photo of this wave, the largest I've EVER ridden - Arena waves make Macaronis look like Tourmaline!"

BA's Liner Notes:
Just in - One - Dateline The Arena:
Grom Joey took it for the team on his leg! A rabid Morey Eel came out of his cave deep within the bowels of Slip and Slides. The eel took dead aim on Grom Bub, but Grom Joey to the rescue.

He [Joey] offered his leg to the the toothy critter, and the eel took the bait [a dead eel washed up this morning near Slip and Slides - a visiting veterinarian said it appeared the eel died from the ingestion of Grom Skin].

All the groms owe Joey a big Thank You for his bravery! This photo of Joey's leg is only for those with a strong constitution, an iron stomach, and better yet, poor eyesight.
======
Just in - Two - Dateline The spacious offices of A Day With BA dot Com:
I used to wish that I had the balance to take-off on FoamBalls and stand-up. Well, I never achieved the required balance, so I kindda gave up on BallingFoam, err, FoamBalling.
- BUT -
Now that I have joined the ranks of Half Men [at least I'm not a Flat Man] balance, at least in my case, is not as important as the ability to laugh at danger.

This morning I caught the FoamBall of a lifetime.

Naturally, Matt from SurfInside did not capture the moment on film, but someone actually witnessed the event - He or she sent my crack publishing team this email - Please bear in mind, we did not make-up the following email - we're not that clever - proving again that fact is stranger than fiction!

"Dear adaywithba.com publishers,

You write a lot about Foam-Ball riding and I have been working hard on it, but today I saw a master Foam-Ball rider catch arguably the best Foam-Ball wave I have ever seen.

The ride revealed the essential nature of what makes a great Foam-Ball ride and compelled me to write.

The Rider (4 key personality traits): patience, seasoned wave experience, unbridled stoke and, above all, no shame.

Wave selection: Waves cannot be breaking top to bottom - must pick a roller with maximum foam depth.  Best waves break midway down the face.

The Setup (critical): line up slightly inside everyone else and paddle like a little-girl.

The Ride: Hold on and make it out the bottom.

Today the undeniable Foam-Ball Master of Southern California showed how it was down. Planting himself squarely in the way of the pack, he turned too late to get into the wave swelling behind him, so the wave pitched and
rolled weakly just underneath his position.

His half-hearted paddle left him trailing behind the ball, but with a surge in the wave, the foam ball thickened propelling him deep into the ball from behind the peak.  Most onlookers assumed he would pop-up flailing, board flopping and screaming for rescue as usual.

But he preserved.

Moments later he was squeezed out the bottom of the ball like a pimple, arms raised in a triumphant claim of victory.

daywithba.com readers, if you ever get a chance to watch this Foam-Ball Master, William Andrews of La Jolla

DO NOT pass it up."

BA sez: "Grom Sebi, Happy Birthday!

You and your family are the best!

It used to be bad enough when I had to share the line-up with just your dad, then your dad AND your mom, now, I still gotta put up with them, AND you, AND your brothers - ouch - I'm moving to Peru and live with your grandparents!
- PLUS -
You only have 2 more years of GromHood - enjoy it while you can - it's a jungle out here!"
AM The Shores and the day after the Children's, err, the Seal Pool Cleanup Efforts
- PLUS -
I owe the volunteers who spent hours on Saturday cleaning-up crapola at Seal Crapola Pool a big apology - and I have another of my lame excuses:
I took about 200 digital photos of your clean-up efforts at the Seal Pool on Saturday. The last photo I took was of the Harpy who, I guess, is one of many who are responsible for the change of Children's Pool to the Seal Crapola Pool - Maybe if hadn't taken her photo, my photo card would not have self destructed - Anyway - you guys did a great job - Thank you for all of your efforts - and I hope you took long hot showers and doused yourselves with disinfectant after you left the party - by the way - who won the award for finding the largest, most fossilized seal t**d?
It's pretty hard to argue facts against emotions - good luck - and I hope Debbie's Plan works out as some sort of compromise.

Anyway - back to the fun stuff:

BA's Liner Notes - The Brazil Babe's looking for a Grom Gone Wild...Warren to the rescue | Finger Pointing on The Rocks | The first Triple Wash-Up in 5,000 years at Slip and Slides. Emery welcomes everyone to Wind**Sea.

Speaking of Welcome to Wind**Sea, following is another [boring] example of what NOT to do when you're caught inside.

You sit inside for a few reasons, among them:
A. You are not ready to mix it up with the guys on the outside.

B. You like the inside because maybe you can catch more waves.
1. If you do choose to sit inside, you gotta be prepared to stay out of the way of surfers sitting outside of you. They will be catching bigger, and perhaps, much more critical waves than you will on the inside. It doesn't matter if you're sitting inside or attempting to get out of the way of the surfers already riding the wave...you're just an obstacle [speed bump / buoy] to the completion of their ride.

2. If the surfer on the outside is riding a wave, don't paddle in the same direction the surfer is going. You're just gonna get in the way. You are tied to your board, STOP, take it on the head, let the rider get his wave.

Your turn for a good wave, maybe, someday, will come.

3. Luckily in this case, the wave was small, the rider's board weighs less than 10 pounds, and W***** sure ain't no heavyweight - no harm - this time - but it coulda been a pretty significant foul.

4. Lesson Learned??

BA's Liner Notes -

By the way - This photographer, and his very talented assistant, picked La Jolla's premier location in which to pose his model. The Arena Oasis known as Runoffs, among other names, is the only location between Testosterones and New Jersey Reef that is watered and fertilized regularly. Normally Runoffs' Greenbelt is packed with locals and their families, all enjoying its unique sights, sounds and aroma[s].

BA's Liner Notes - Taylor borrowed my camera, supposedly, to take photos of local surfing action, for some sort of Science Fair.
Taylor's Photos - The only "Deleted" photos in Taylor's Album were a few of ME offending, err, offering the traditional "Welcome To Wind**Sea!"

Starring: Wave Claim | Grom Ian | Grom BA | Grom Skippy | Groms Warren and Jacob
In defense of Taylor's [and my] photo skills, or lack thereof - The "Auto-Focus" gizmo in my camera and / or lens, is not working - so one has gotta manually focus the stupid camera - it ain't easy.
Additionally, Taylor is 16 years old, and obviously, his interests, unlike mine, have a tendency to drift away from the task at hand - The TASK: Taking thousands of out of focus and under / overexposed surfing [ONLY] photos -
I guess the ability to stay [manually] focused is what separates the true pros [like I am] from the amateurs [like Taylor is]?

BA's Liner Note to Parents of The Juvenile Seals:

I'm not telling you anything you don't know, but I gotta say it, 'cause non-surf parents will start sending me emails accusing me of encouraging dangerous behavior.

Every one of the kids at play, today, at Slips and / or Slides, may, or maybe already have, surfed, or will surf, in conditions much more challenging than today's.

Like most adolescents at play, the games are great preparation for future adventures; adventures potentially far from home and without a support group of surf brothers.

If my parents had known what I was doing - occasionally - when I was your kids' age, I'm sure I would have scared the h*ll out of them. I honestly feel that the controlled risks I took as a kid, may have saved my life more than once at places like LJ Cove, Honolua Bay, The Pipeline, etc.

There are hundreds of out of focus, redundant, and exceptionally boring photos in the albums below -

My photo editing efforts consist of:
REMOVE the worst from the worst, upload the balance - this BA method of editing is far easier than trying to KEEP the best of the worst - after all, photo storage is cheap, and I've learned how to pad my hit count [as if the hit count were important]

John Noris took some of the photos in Album 1, so blame him not me!
Buried somewhere in the photos below, is a way far from home member of the Pittsburgh Hells Angels and the injury of the day - waaa, another near death experience for BA.

BA's Liner Notes -
When I visited The Arena this afternoon, I saw the local crew, including Ian, Derek, E-Rock, Drew, Grom Ian, Grom Hunter, Minnesota Mark, Grom Joey, Grom Johnny Noris, Grom John King - AND - Gasp- an Adult Grom, Reed Mayne.

My La Jolla Shores Surf Gang [late 1950's - early 1960's] was quickly shoved aside by my younger brother's Surf Gang [early - mid 1960's], and a few years later, Reed's Surf Gang [late 1960's early 1970's], including his brother, Joel; Gary Keating, Tim Lynch, Bolton, Rusty, et al, became the La Jolla Shores Big Shots -
By the way - one -I ran into Retiree Mike and I discussed my timeline with him. My dates are totally dorked, so I gotta start taking notes again of names, faces, and dates.
Great to see you in the Arena Line-up Reed!
[I thought, almost 50 years ago, that an El Spantaneo, Quasimoto, Dead Cockroach, Reverse Coffin, Hang Ten, Drop-Knee Turn, were the apex surfing maneuvers - today's Arena surfers are performing maneuvers that I couldn't have even imagined, much less drawn with my primitive stick figures when I was day dreaming away my days at La Jolla Junior Senior High School]
I'm sure that anyone who suffers thru the experience of reading my daily dribble about how proud and honored I am to still be even a minor part of La Jolla Surfing Community, must be ready to jump off the cliff at Black's, but I just gotta say it - WHEW - glad I'm still doing it, considering some of the other, more long term, options.

And by the way, two, in about 18 more months I'll have even more laws on my side to protect me in the lineup - Yeah Baby - serious laws protecting me against: ELDER Abuse.
