"Yesterday is History - Tomorrow is a Mystery - And Today is a Gift..." |
I've written a couple of times about the NROTC Scholarship I received in 1962 -BA
I guess I did not have the discipline, nor the courage, to finish the program and become a Navy Pilot.
My first college roommate - Brian Webber - had the same scholarship I did -
After graduation, Brian chose to go the marine route and was killed in Vietnam -
A tragic loss to his family and to this country -
I have a never ending admiration for those who served in our country's military, and even more for those who were injured in battle -
I just hope that a bit of surfing instruction will - KEEP YOU SURFING!
You'll never hear a peep from me about too many veterans in the water!

Shark AttackFeaturing: Jason sez: "Hey BA - wanna share some coffee and leftovers [shark bait]?"I received thousands, err, maybe one or two, emails demanding to know what type of shark I photo-ed at La Jolla's very own Shark Pit.BA
Some of the emailers suggested that the photos may be of:Juvenile Great White Sharks, Mutant Harbor Seals, Mutant Tourmaline Surfers, Shamu's Mutant Spawn, Mutant Human Harbor Seal Huggers [maybe they are not mutants after all] etc. After extensive searching thru a mind numbing number of Fish Books, Harbor Seal Books, Killer Whale Books, Shark Books, and even Mutant Human Books, a student from, of all places, New Jersey Reef, somewhere near New York City, gave me the answer:
It's a Broadnose [confirmed man eater - remember La Jolla Cove, 1959?] Seven Gill Shark!AM Photos of Team Mattasha
Please don't believe everything you read or hear - the 1959 attack was by a Broadnose - NOT a Great White! [I think]

I'm not a big fan of change when it comes to La Jolla's beachfronts.BA
I'm not sure exactly how 939 passed the planning / construction scrutiny - nor how in the h*ll the Sea Lodge was able to replace a parking lot.
However - I gotta admit that I was pretty happy, when, sometime in the early sixties, the city built the mini barrier on the west side of the lot -
"Oh jeeze, here comes another stupid BA story about the way things USED to be!"The reason I liked the barrier was because when we got stuffed into trash cans and pushed from the alley above the lot we wouldn't roll all the way down to the water's edge - we only went 1/2 way to the water - whew - thanks barrier!
This morning it was pretty cool watching the local Wind**Sea-ers engage in a lively debate - perhaps - a bit late?
I'm not sure how long the planning process took - nor exactly how it started - but I guess in the big picture - if this [The Lot remodel] is the worst "change" that takes place at Wind**Sea in the local kids' lifetimes - it ain't too bad!
I just hope for their sake, that this is not the start of the proverbial "slippery slope."
The "Ban the Can" effort succeeded about 35 or so years ago - let's hope we don't have to do this again [the cartoons were pretty funny, though]
