My reply:
"If all the La Jolla Shores SUPers could surf [on a surfboard] as well as Gail, Mitch, Katie, Ricky, and a few others, my blood pressure would probably stay within the 'slightly elevated' range.
In my world, a good surfer is a good surfer, a beginner is a beginner, and a kook is a kook.
There was a time in my surf life, when I would rather surf by myself than share the lineup with anyone!
As long as the beginners respect my 150 yard radius of death - I can live with that.
If kooks respect my 150 mile radius of death - we can live with that.
If one has to ask the definition of a kook, and what the difference is between a beginner and a kook, I'm sure at any beach, the question will be answered in a variety of methods, and hopefully, relatively painlessly."

Tom "Boomer [the body surfing beach, not a demographic]" Keener and I had the pleasure of enjoying a great dinner with New Jersey Reef Mikey and his wonderful family.
We ate at the La Jolla Shores Hotel and I told Mike that, when I was a kid, that where we are sitting in the restaurant, used to be a parking lot where the commercial fishermen would spread out and repair their nets.
Kindda like the 3rd iteration of a 1970 song some may remember:
"They paved paradise and put up a parkin' lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique, and a swingin' hot spot"
From paradise --> to a parking lot used by fisherman ---> to the hotel
