RK
in the early morning mist, at least 1/2 mile out to sea, somewhere between Wind**Sea and Simmons

I never met Bob Simmons, never saw him surf, but when guys like Carl Ekstrom and his friends speak admiringly about him, I listen.

I do know that Simmons designed and built some surfboards that were way ahead of their time - in fact - there are some Simmons boards on display at the The Surfing Heritage Foundation in San Clemente, CA

I think that one of the greatest tributes one generation can pay to another, older generation, is to honor the men and their contributions to history.

I was genuinely moved when I saw Richard Kenvin [RK] and Jon Roseman today, waxing-up a couple of surfboards that were replicas of Simmons' boards, circa 1950 or so.

There were two boards, one was a balsa board, shaped by Terry Martin, and the other was a foam board, and I did not see who shaped it.

The boards were "approved" by Timmy Bessell and Carsten Booth - besides being phenomenal surfers, both Tim and Carsten have a keen appreciation of La Jolla's contribution to the sport of surfing.

More to follow ...
