- Surf Nazis -

I know that if one has managed to get this far thru all of my crapola, one may wonder what in the h*ll I'm ranting about now - here's my best effort:

A wayyyyyyy long time ago, when I was learning to surf, some of the WindanSea guys were featured in a surf movie -

These guys came blasting out - on their Flexyies - of the drain pipe above the WindanSea Shack -
"If you were part of this, you were there at the right time.
The 50'S were the place to be in the surfing world.
If you were there for the Simmons transition, the Velzy transition, the excellent balsa boards made by Dale, Hap, Greg, Renny. If you went to Zutes parties at Abalone cove.
Did the drain on a Flexy Flyer at Wind and Sea, bleached your hair in 57, kept your board in the lockers on the Hermosa pier in the winter time, hung ten off..."
Nothing too unusual so far, however, the apparel of choice for these guys were WWII nazi uniforms -

I've heard conflicting stories regarding the genesis of the outfits.

Regardless of the how and why the uniforms, the outcome was that my mom heard about the Nazi / Flexy scene and told me that I would NEVER be allowed to venture even one of my Hang Ten Toes anywhere near WindanSea - 'cause ALL of the WindanSea guys were Nazis.

Anyway - some how - some way - in my lexicon, a surf nazi became a stoked surfer, who would salute other surfers with a variation of the "seig heil"

I was always a bit paranoid about my salute being too nazi-like so I kept it [my salute] to a more limp-wristed one - as illustrated by Robbie in the photo:

Sometimes, the salute could also be given by a surfer caught inside, to a close-out wave, especially at Black's.

One could stand-up on the board during the paddle-out, right before the wave broke, and offer-up the salute -

Kindda like the last great act of defiance - and the unsaid words of something like "We who are about to die, salute you??"

Remarkably, for one my age, I still have vivid memories of the salute, and the thoughts of death at Black's, before taking a Black's Bomb on the head.
